In 3d it does not ask to set or input an elevation . In 2d it does , please explain why , thought it could compute either way with relative accuracy.

In 2d mode it does not use elevations and therefore you must enter the elevation for the desired geodetic location. In 3d mode it does its best to resolve the elevation from the information relayed by the satellites, and its own internal algorithms. GPS is traditionally weak reporting elevations since the position given is actually on an ellipsoid, and the elevation is computed using geodetic algorithms that model the geoid for a geodetic location, therefore you will encounter both ellipsoidal and orthometric heights.
